In addition, USB's high-speed
32-bit digital PC link allows for a real-time display of acquired data, while
eliminating the need for expensive memory in the acquisition device. With the backing of Intel, Microsoft, and
hundreds of other computer and peripheral companies, USB has quickly become a
new universal standard for PC-Based Test. Because
USB is deterministic, the bandwidth allocated to a peripheral is guaranteed
for as long as the peripheral requests it. This means that SOUNDSERIES
data acquisition I/O modules can guarantee a particular transfer speed with
no loss of data. Advantages Over
PC-Card (PCMCIA) and Plug-in Board Systems . . . Compared to PC-Card-based
systems, our advanced sound-data acquisition I/O modules offer many
advantages. PC-Cards generally ARE NOT
isolated, can not handle high voltage inputs, have
flimsy I/O connectors with limited channel capacity via a 16-bit computer
interface resulting in slow data transfer rates, require an external option
for signal connection, consume valuable system resources and are prone to
system-device conflicts. Since PC-Cards install
internal to the PC, the PC must be located close to the test set-up if
low-noise measurements are desired, which is a conflict due to CRT and other
forms of noise interference (i.e. CPU, Video, RF) typically radiating from
the harsh PC environment. In contrast,
SOUNDSERIES modules can be located up to 16 feet away from the PC (or
nearly 100 feet away if hubs are used), offering greater flexibility in test
set-up and improved noise isolation.
Moreover, the long, highly flexible USB cable fastens securely using a
reliable friction-fit connection, avoiding the fragile cabling connection of
most PC-Cards. Finally, SOUNDSERIES modules will typically handle up
to twenty times the input-voltage of typical PC-Card or common sound card
devices. In addition to advantages
over PC-Card-based devices, SOUNDSERIES modules also compare favorably
to data acquisition plug-in boards.
Installation of a plug-in board requires opening the PC with a
screwdriver, and often requires configuration using software or jumpers. In contrast, SOUNDSERIES modules
install easily, can be hot-plugged for immediate use
simply by plugging them into the externally accessible USB port of the PC,
making it easy to transport the modules to another PC at any time. |
